Dental patients face their fears and get their smile back
Nov 26, 2013

For two North East women, nothing was as scary as a trip to see their dentist. However, after overcoming their severe fears, thanks to the help of Queensway Dental Clinic, they are celebrating their new leases of life.
Ronnie Culley and Sarah Urquhart had both avoided the dentists for most of their lives due to an overwhelming fear which stemmed back to bad experiences. Thanks to the patience and guidance of a team of dentists at Queensway Dental Clinic in Billingham, through the conscious sedation service, they were able to undergo vital dental work needed to give them their smiles back.
Ronnie, 67 years old and from Wolviston, came to Queensway two years ago and has since undergone a series of restorative procedures. She said: “I’d had some very bad dental experiences since I was small and as a result I was extremely fearful, so much so I’d get upset just at the thought of going."
“I’d heard about Queensway and the service it provided for anxious patients, so decided to go along as I desperately wanted my teeth looking at and improved. The staff – and in particular Dr. Will Carter – have been incredible, ensuring I’m at ease and I would recommend them to anyone."
“The procedures have changed my life and I couldn’t have done it without the option of conscious sedation. Your fear compounds as you get older, especially the longer you leave it, but now I can come to the dentists without crying or being scared, it’s a huge turnaround. Most recently I had a filling without needing to undergo conscious sedation. I keep smiling to myself in the mirror so I can see my new teeth. I’ve got my confidence back and people tell me I look younger.”
Sarah, 37 years old and from Bishop Auckland has been a patient at Queensway for a year: “The condition of my teeth had deteriorated severely but every time I went to my own dentist for treatment, I’d pass out due to fear so it was an impossible situation. Previous to this it had been at least ten years since my last trip to the dentists. My dentist referred me to Queensway for the conscious sedation service. The staff were fantastic and helped find a solution that was best for everyone; I had All-on-4 dental implants which was made possible through conscious sedation."
“I was terrified the first time I had the treatment with conscious sedation, but since then my fear has definitely eased. Before I came to Queensway I never imagined I would ever get to this stage. My new smile has improved my quality of life as I don’t have to hide my teeth any more.”
Dr. Paul Averley, Managing Partner at Queensway Dental Clinic added: “A fear of going to the dentists is extremely common which is why, for over 15 years, we have been delivering a safe, high quality sedation service provided by our team of extremely well-trained and experienced sedation-qualified dentists, consultant anaesthetists, therapists and nurses. We have treated thousands of patients who came to us feeling extremely anxious, so anxious in fact they couldn’t undergo even the simplest of dental treatments without conscious sedation. Using techniques to manage anxiety, we have helped people who have not seen the dentist for many years and given them their smile back.”
