Queensway introduces laser technology to eradicate tooth infection

To stay at the forefront of dental technology and offer the most advanced care to our patients, we have invested into the Helbo system for the care and management of patients who have periodontal disease.

Helbo uses dye and laser light to combat bacteria which are the cause of infection in the mouth.

Information about tooth infection:

A tooth bed that is infected with bacteria and inflamed degenerates constantly. Over time, the teeth lose their grip. The same applies to implants, i.e. artificial tooth roots, around which the jaw bone becomes inflamed. This results in the natural or artificial tooth becoming loose and eventually falling out.

Signs of a bacterial tooth infection include:

- Odour in the mouth

- Bleeding gums (only in the case of non-smokers)

- Sensitive teeth

- Deterioration of the gums

- Exposed necks of the teeth

- Loose teeth

Traditionally the infected area around a tooth or dental implant is treated with either antibiotics or using a disinfecting rinsing solution, but both have disadvantages when compared to laser therapy.

As with any medication there is always the risk of side effects and antibiotics affect the whole body not just the treatable area. With disinfectant it is only effective on the surface and does not suffice in the case of severe or difficult to access infection.

Information about the laser system:

The Helbo laser system works by applying a blue dye solution to the infected sites which is then activated by exposure to the mild laser. Due to the combination of light activated dye solution and laser light, highly reactive oxygen is produced – this leads to the destruction of bacteria.

If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, please contact Queensway Dental Clinic on 01642 554667 to book a free 30 minute periodontal assessment with Dr Mike Barnett.
