School children are all smiles for dental visit
Jun 20, 2013

Nursery and Infant School children at Red House School in Norton attended an assembly with a difference this week when Queensway Dental Clinic visited for National Smiles Month.
The 165 Red House School pupils ranging from nursery to year three attended the assembly ran by Dr Ian Lane of Queensway Dental Clinic, in order to find out more about dental hygiene and keeping little teeth clean in a fun, engaging way.
The assembly occurred in the final week of National Smiles Month, which aims to raise awareness of easy ways to look after oral health at all ages.
The 20 minute assembly included information on the importance of happy, small teeth, what sugar can do to teeth, what foods are health or unhealthy, why we need healthy teeth and how to take care of teeth. The talk finished with a fun quiz for each class. Representatives from each class were presented with a goody bag.
Dr Ian Lane commented: “Throughout the year we work with the community to increase their knowledge of maintaining good oral health. National Smiles Month presents us with the opportunity to step up this activity through different events, such as the visit to Red House School.
“We had a great time at the school, teaching the children the importance of clean teeth and eating healthy foods with the odd treat on special occasions. The pupils were very responsive and enthusiastic, learning all about good oral health and what will happen if they don’t look after their teeth. We hope they took this new knowledge away with them and applied it at home.”
Miss Everington, Headmistress Nursery and Infant School said: “The children thoroughly enjoyed the assembly by Dr Lane and were fascinated with how much sugar could be found in products like tomato ketchup. They have remembered the important facts about keeping their teeth clean and healthy, and one child has even asked for an egg timer for his birthday next week so he can time himself brushing his teeth for two minutes twice a day!”
