BILLINGHAM PRACTICE
In 2001 Paul qualified from Newcastle Dental School. He completed his general professional training at Newcastle Dental Hospital and in general dental practice in Sunderland. Following completion of this training, he was awarded the MFDS from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2003.
During GPT, Paul developed his interest in conscious sedation. He worked with his training practice to initiate a conscious sedation service employing both inhalation and intravenous techniques. Paul continued to work in this large NHS practice for a further five years. During this time Paul, in collaboration with South Tyneside Community Dental Service, developed a practice-based inhalation conscious sedation service for paediatric patients. He also led a referral service for anxious adult patients. In January 2005 Paul successfully completed his Diploma in Conscious Sedation in Dentistry at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.
In 2008 Paul joined Queensway as an associate and became a partner at the clinic in April 2014. During this time he has enjoyed working as part of an enthusiastic, motivated and skilled multi-disciplinary team to further develop his skills and experience is all areas of dentistry. Paul retains his passion for working with anxious patients and to help them confront their fears of dental treatment through the use of good patient management and often conscious sedation techniques. Paul continues to hold the position of Communications Secretary for the Society for the Advancement of Anaesthesia in Dentistry, a national charity which promotes the use of safe sedation within the UK. He has been involved in the development of national guidelines for sedation in dentistry as part of this role.
Paul has also developed his understanding and appreciation of the role of the whole dental team in providing high quality, modern and evidence-based patient care. He is proud of the work that has been achieved at Queensway over the last three years in using a team of dentists, dental therapists, dental hygienists and oral health educators to provide excellent care for many of our routine patients.
Paul is interested in the use of modern and forward-thinking dentistry to provide predictable treatment for patients with complex oral health needs. He has recently travelled to Seattle to begin an exciting programme of training at the world-renowned Kois Center looking at the risk assessment and management of patients with complex problems. He looks forward to continuing to develop his skills and knowledge in this area and integrate into his clinical practice at Queensway.
Paul has recently completed the well regarded Smile Tube TV Ultimate Year Implant Course which provides excellent didactic and hands-on training in the placement and restoration of dental implants. This course fulfils the General Dental Council’s requirements to be able to provide implant treatment within dental practice.
Paul has a keen interest in dental education and holds a Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Professional Practice from the University of Central Lancashire. He is actively involved in providing and organising training and courses both internally and externally and is extremely proud of the level of training undertaken by all staff at Queensway.
Linked to education, Paul holds the role of a quality assurance of education inspector for the General Dental Council. This involves inspecting educational establishments throughout the UK to ensure that courses training individuals prior to registration with the GDC e.g. dentists, hygienists, therapists, meet the criteria set out by the GDC. This task is linked to the GDC publication “Preparing for Practice”, which clearly describes the skill mix and attributes all new registrants should possess within the four domains of clinical, communication, professionalism and management and leadership.
Away from the practice, Paul enjoys spending time getting into the outdoors with his wife, two children and their dog from their home in the North York Moors.
